For my documentary I have chosen to use the Bournemouth local radio station, Hot Radio as my case study.
I have already gain permission from the station manger Russel to do so and will be filming/ interviewing people there at a later date.
A little bit about Hot Radio...
Hot radio started in 2008. It has been a community station since day one being run by multiple different volunteers over the years. At this point in time it is run by over 70 volunteers of all ages from all different backgrounds.
They originally began broadcasting to just Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch using FM, however in recent years it has expanded to broadcasting to the majority of the South-coast across FM and DAB.
They focus on music from the late 90's till now covering all genres as well as airing national and local DJ sets over the weekends.
As hot are a non-profit organisation their funding is solely based on sponsors and community donations. At this point in time the station has a lot of community love and support behind them helping to keep them alive and rocking.
Many business in the local area pay for advertising slots on the air witch
also helps with Hot Radios funding, companies like Yellow Buses and Mploy.
The local Community supports Hot and Hot supports it back through their charity events as well as there positive focus and shout outs on air. They help to keep locals entertained and up to date on the things happening in there area as well as working/ hosting many of the big local events such as Poole Harbour Festival.
How has Social Media helped Hot?
Got more younger people involved in volunteering there.
Grown their prospective audience.
Allowed better communication between listeners and presenter.
Better advertisement for events.
Live streams give public opportunity to see behind the scenes and meet the presenters.
